A sexual assault occurred on the St. Scholastica campus on Sunday during the early morning hours, according to a campus-wide email from Vice President for Student Life Steve Lyons.
The assault occurred outdoors by the Birch and Willow apartment buildings.
The college reported the assault to the community based on the federal “Jeanne Cleary Act,” which requires colleges and universities across the U.S. to disclose information about crime on and around their campuses.

Lyons’ email also said that it was an important part of the Benedictine value of community for all to be aware of the situation.
The assaulted student reports no recognition of the assailant. There is a minimal description of the attacker. He is described as a male African American in his 20’s, between five foot ten and six feet tall, average weight, with very short hair.
At the time of the attack, campus security and all Resident Assistants (RA’s) were notified in order to increase security efforts. Campus security tapes are being reviewed, and the college is working with the involved authorities to

Sexual Assault Awareness Month Observed

Duluth Host to Events During Month of April

By Andrea Smith

April marks Sexual Assault Awareness Month throughout the world.
During the month, communities work to raise awareness of sexual assault and sexual violence through events. Duluth is no exception.
On April 10, PAVSA (Program for Aid to Victims of Sexual Assault), hosted Walk a Mile in Her Shoes, a march for men to protest against rape, sexual assault and gender violence. Women were able to participate if they came with a man.
For the march, men were encouraged to wear high heels or dress in drag, although this was not required. They wore

sashes and carried signs with rape statistics. The march ended at Harbor City School, where a rally was held with guest speakers, including Duluth Mayor Don Ness. Following the rally, a documentary, Killing Us Softly 3: Advertising’s Image of Women, was shown.
Another important event for awareness this month is PAVSA’s Take Back the Night, a protest and rally that spreads the message about the elimination of sexual violence. Take Back the Night will be held on Thursday, April 24 at the Washington Center (301 N. 1st Ave. W.), beginning at 5:30 p.m. There will be information about sexual assault, free food and entertainment.
