Facebook is a part of student life. With Student Senate Executive Elections concluded, and the winners declared, did the use of Facebook contribute to the Senate campaigns?
Each Senate duo had a Facebook group dedicated to their campaign. Members of the student body could become familiar with the candidates and review their platforms.
The St. Scholastica network on Facebook has 2,909 members. With the ability to reach this many people with one group invite or friend request, Facebook is a logical step in a campus campaign.
This year, Senate passed |
a new rule regarding campaigns. According to the constitution, “candidates may not be endorsed by current Senate executives, Senators or the current Student Trustee using their position title or name. Endorsements consist of publicly broadcasted media, electronic media, or printed propaganda stating endorsement from any of the aforementioned representatives.”
Senate decided that Facebook was too difficult to regulate, so it was fair game.
