Saturday’s Snowball a Success

Student Leaders’ Planning Makes Dance Run Smoothly

By Andrew Hadrich
Student Trustee

For those that attended Snowball Saturday night, it was a shock to see the Reif transformed from a modest gymnasium into a scene straight out of Casino Royale. Flickering candles, the sound of a state-of-the-art DJ system, an exquisitely decorated Reif and an extravagant dessert platter greeted the nearly 700 guests of Snowball 2008. The specially ordered hardwood dance floor was quickly filled by formally dressed students ready to dance.
“This year’s Snowball was one of the best dances I’ve ever been to,” said Kaitlyn Leveille,

junior Nursing major. “I had so much fun and the student leaders and staff volunteers did a great job with decorations and making this such a successful event, I can’t wait until next year.”
“This was my fourth Snowball, and it was by far the best one yet. If it was up to me I would never have it at the DECC again,” said Jon Sampson, a senior physical therapy graduate student.
Vice President for Student Affairs Steve Lyons and Assistant Dean of Students for Campus Life Betsy Kneepkens were pleased with how this year’s event

St. Scholastica Prepares for Day at the Capitol

By Aaron T. Rose
Editor-in-Chief

St. Scholastica students are getting geared up to advocate for an increase in state financial aid on Feb. 27 in St. Paul at the annual Day at the Capitol.
Each year at Day at the Capitol, Scholastica students become lobbyists, persuading their representatives in the state legislature to vote for an increase in the number of scholarships given and the amount of money awarded through the Minnesota State Grant.
“The purpose of the State Grant program is to make it possible for Minnesota students and families from all economic backgrounds to obtain a post-secondary education that best meets their educational

needs,” said Alissa Kaake, Student Senate President and co-organizer of this year’s events. “The families that the State Grant impacts most are first-generation, low to middle income students.”
“800 CSS students get money for college from the State Grant—that’s one-third of our student population,” said St. Scholastica Grant Proposal Specialist Angie Johnson.
“The State Grant is particularly important to St. Scholastica,” said Kaake. “CSS has one of the highest percentages of financial need of any of the Minnesota private colleges. The availability of the State Grant directly effects our diversity on campus.”

Convenience Store
Coming to Campus?

By Nathan Sand

Let’s face it, Storm’s Den doesn’t offer everyday low prices, and I’ve seen vending machines with a larger dry goods selection. Don’t get me wrong, it does provide awesome aid to hunger with an appealing menu, while supplying much-needed sitting space, but aside from it’s prepared food, Storm’s offers a limited selection of conveniences.
Recently, students have formed the Convenience Store Committee (CSC) to suggest a solution to this nuisance—a convenience store.
So far, it’s an idea gaining momentum. On Jan. 29, a small group of students met to discuss possibilities in making the plan

plausible. Unlike Storm’s, the store would carry a variety of household essentials: milk, eggs, fresh fruit and vegetables, medication and the like. Mainly, the store would bring in products and prices comparable to an ordinary convenience store. It’s a simple, yet tricky idea.
Though they have gained support from Steve Lyons, the plan has not yet been presented to the Resource Committee or Student Senate. Before any major decisions can be made, the CSC has to suggest a concrete proposal to gain school support.
The CSC initially wants to gain access to T87 (controlled by Student Senate) near the Mitchell Auditorium entrance, to secure a
