Sandra Riggs

Position: Editor-In-Chief…again
Year in school: Senior
Major/minor: Major in Biology Pre-Medicine, minors in Chemistry and Psychology
Hometown: Bagley/Bemidji-ish area
What would be your ideal career?: A physician
How you spent your summer vacation: Serving overpriced food to tourists at Itasca State Park for the fifth year, doing some volunteering, and trying to use my brain as little as possible.
Favorite food: Chocolate chip cookies
Favorite day of the week and why: Saturday, because no one will yell if I sleep until noon.
What you like to do in your free time: I don’t have much of this.
Favorite part of CSS: Having some small classes and, of course, the cadavers.
Pet peeve: Late stories!
Favorite restaurant: The Olive Garden. The breadsticks and salad rock!
Type of vehicle you drive: 2005 red Honda civic—yeah, my car is cooler than I am.
Favorite animal and why: Dogs, because I have two back home lovingly named Cupcake and Sparky.
What type of toothpaste do you use?: Right now I’m trying to finish up a tube of Aquafresh, but I am anxious to get back to my favorite Crest vanilla mint.
Favorite TV channel: I guess ABC since that is what “Grey’s Anatomy” is on, although I only get three channels, so the competition really isn’t that tough.
If you were stranded on an island, what one thing would you bring?: A friend because I would go crazy faster if I just had the trees and sand to talk to.
One person you would like to meet: Whoever named the Cable so I can ask them why they named the Cable and what exactly it means. I lose sleep over this!
Why should people read the Cable?: To see if we cause more controversy than we did last year—oh yeah, and because it’s important to stay informed of your college community.

Position: News Editor
Year in school: Senior
Major/minor: Double major in English and Communication
Hometown: Grand Marais, MN
What would be your ideal career?: Being a travel writer based out of the UK with plenty of free time to work on my poetry and prose.
How you spent your summer vacation: Working as an information receptionist at the Gunflint Ranger Station, issuing Boundary Water permits, answering lots of questions about the Cavity Lake Wildfire and occasionally dressing up as Smokey Bear.
Favorite food: A monkey sandwich: toast, peanut butter and banana.
Favorite day of the week and why: Thursday – the day before the day before the weekend!
What you like to do in your free time: Read, write, and sleep.
Favorite part of CSS: The Cable office and the mailroom.
Pet peeve: People who don’t know the difference between “its” and “it’s;” “their,” “there,” and “they’re;” or “your” and “you’re.”
Favorite restaurant: Old Chicago
Type of vehicle you drive: A wool-colored 2002 Toyota Corolla
Favorite animal and why: Dogs, because not only are they always happy to see you, they enjoy all the things I do: eating, sleeping and going for long walks.
What type of toothpaste do you use?: Crest Whitening plus Scope – Citrus Splash
Favorite TV channel: No real preference, but gotta love ABC and “Grey’s”!
If you were stranded on an island, what one thing would you bring?: The Complete Works of William Shakespeare.
One person you would like to meet: Cammi Granato, Olympic gold medalist on the 1998 U.S. women’s hockey team.
Why should people read the Cable?: Because it’s probably the best read ever: interesting, informative, and your weekly link to the greater CSS community surrounding you. The Cable loves you!

What would be your ideal career?: Writing about sports and coaching youth soccer.
How you spent your summer vacation: Making media guides, sleeping, running and playing at the beach.
Favorite food: Ice cream
Favorite day of the week and why:Tuesday, because it’s recycling day.
What you like to do in your free time: Read and run

Pet peeve: Smoking
Favorite restaurant: Cossetta’s

Favorite animal and why: Pandas

If you were stranded on an island, what one thing would you bring?: A boat.
One person you would like to meet: Captain Jack Sparrow or Dane Cook.
Why should people read the Cable?: You will learn to touch the world.

Mike Socha

 

Position: Webmaster
Year in school: Senior
Major/minor: CIS / Spanish
Hometown: Virginia, MN
What would be your ideal career?: A career having to do with people and computers both at the same time where I could excel and be good at it.
How you spent your summer vacation: I went on a missions trip to Oacaca Mexico for just over two months. We worked with different Mexicans from around the area of Tlaxiaco in the fields or construction or whatever, talked to people/hung out, and made friends.
Favorite food: DiGiorno Pizzas rock my socks, but really I love a whole variety of foods. Chinese stuff, Mexican stuff......
Favorite day of the week and why: It would probably be Saturday, just because it's so relaxed, but I guess I like all the days of the week. Any day that I'm alive.
What you like to do in your free time: Maybe a little snowboarding. Haven't gone much this year even though I have a season's pass :(
Favorite part of CSS: I think it would have to be the quaintness of the campus. It's pretty community-esque.
Pet peeve: I don't like having to give plasma in order to eat. jk
Favorite restaurant: Olive Garden of course. Unlimited breadsticks and soup and salad all the way man!
Type of vehicle you drive: A blue '95 Pontiac Sunfire Coupe with a .2 Liter 1 Piston engine.
Favorite animal and why: Monkeys, dolphins and killer whales, maybe tigers too. They're just sweet. Beautiful and/or strong and/or smart.
What type of toothpaste do you use?: Currently working on a tube of Colgate Sparklin White CinnaMint.
Favorite TV channel: National Geographic, History and Discovery Channels.
If you were stranded on an island, what one thing would you bring?: A Swiss Army Knife?
One person you would like to meet: King David. He was crazy.
Why should people read the Cable?: To see what's going on with our community.

Julian Niera-Sanchez

Position: Business Manager
Year in school: Senior
Major/minor: Economics major, Math and Environmental Politics minor
Hometown: Bogotá, Colombia (please note it is not “Columbia”)
What would be your ideal career?: A career that involved traveling around the world advising governments how to manage their natural resources (maybe advising my own government would be enough of a dream).
How you spent your summer vacation: I was in Lincoln, Nebraska helping out with some research for half of the summer. For the second half I got to climb a volcano in Guatemala and then I went home and learned some Capoeira.
Favorite food: Bandeja Paisa, which is a Colombian dish that includes ground meat, beans, rice, fried egg, chorizo, arepa and chicharrón. It usually comes with avocado, tomato and sauces like hogao. Delicious.
Favorite day of the week and why: Saturday, because it is the day I can spend on myself without worrying about next day’s deadlines (Sunday) or waking up early for class (Friday).
What you like to do in your free time: I like to read The Economist or news on Colombian newspapers. Otherwise, if I feel energetic I enjoy rock
climbing, playing tennis or going out salsa dancing.
Favorite part of CSS: It’s people. They really make me feel like this is my home out of home.
Pet peeve:Greasy creams or lotions.
Favorite restaurant: Chipotle
Type of vehicle you drive: A green Jimmy, although I wished I drove something way smaller.
Favorite animal and why: Monkeys, because I would love to be one.
What type of toothpaste do you use?: Aquafresh Extreme Clean Empowermint, plus Whitening.
Favorite TV channel: Comedy Central, but only when “The Colbert Report” is on.
If you were stranded on an island, what one thing would you bring?: A good long book with soft pages, such as Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand.
One person you would like to meet: The Crocodile Hunter
Why should people read the Cable?: Because if you don’t care to learn about what’s going on around you, you better not whine when it hits you.

 

Angie Johnson

Position: Layout Editor
Year in school: Senior
Major/minor: Double major in English and Communication
Hometown: McGregor, MN
What would be your ideal career?: Writing whatever I want, or reading and editing other people’s writing.
How you spent your summer vacation: I worked full-time at my hometown newspaper as the editorial intern. In my spare time I hung out with my parents and friends and played in a beach volleyball league.
Favorite food: It’s a toss-up between strawberries, chocolate, and peanut butter.
Favorite day of the week and why: Friday. I like the excitement of the upcoming weekend.
What you like to do in your free time: I love reading and writing, spending time with family and friends, laughing, and listening to country music. I also enjoy shopping, going to movies, and drinking Caribou.
Favorite part of CSS: I like attending a small school.
Pet peeve: Messiness.
Favorite restaurant: I’m a big fan of the Olive Garden and Applebee’s.
Type of vehicle you drive: A really sweet Nissan Altima. It’s got the fake wood-looking stuff around the CD player and everything.
Favorite animal and why: Dogs, just because.
What type of toothpaste do you use?: Nothing but Crest cavity protection in the regular paste.
Favorite TV channel: No lie, it’s ABC Family. I also like the regular ABC because I’ve been hooked since day one on “Grey’s Anatomy” and “What About Brian.”
If you were stranded on an island, what one thing would you bring?: Hope. I guess an Eagle Scout would be useful, too.
One person you would like to meet: The person who can give me an amazing job after I graduate.
Why should people read the Cable?: Because it’s a great way to find out what’s going on on-campus, and it’s fun when the articles and letters to the editor stir up controversy. The Cable is the public forum of the students, faculty, and staff at CSS, and we encourage everyone to take advantage of it.

Position: Advertising Manager

Major/minor: Advertising & Public Relations major, Management minor

What would be your ideal career?: Managing ad sales/placement in major magazines.
How you spent your summer vacation: Working and meeting new people.
Favorite food: Chocolate
Favorite day of the week and why: Friday, because you have the entire weekend to look forward to.
What you like to do in your free time: What free time? Well, hang out with the friends, hike, rollerblade, shop, listen to music, read, watch movies; the list could go forever, really.
Favorite part of CSS: My friends.
Pet peeve: Stepping in water with socks on and people smacking their gum – don’t do it!
Favorite restaurant: Bellisio’s
Type of vehicle you drive: A Chevy Prizm, baby.
Favorite animal and why: Dogs, because they are fun, loving, and your best friend for life when you treat them right.
What type of toothpaste do you use?: Crest – herbal minty goodness for the mouth.
Favorite TV channel: Discovery
If you were stranded on an island, what one thing would you bring?: A toothbrush.
One person you would like to meet: Conan O’Brien
Why should people read the Cable?: Because everybody’s doing it. Stay in the loop, people.
