Lighting a Tradition Signals Start to Holiday Season

Despite Snowy Weather, Celebration Continues

By Andrea Smith

The holiday season officially started Tuesday night at St. Scholastica with the celebration of Lighting a Tradition on the front steps of Tower Hall. The event got the go-ahead despite blizzard conditions.
Sponsored by the Student Alumni Association, this event ceremonially lights the holiday displays on campus.
Following Advent Vespers in Our Lady Queen of Peace chapel, students, staff, faculty and community members gathered on the front steps of Tower Hall. Luminarias lit the path to the doors, but Tuesday’s snowstorm and winds prevented the candles

from staying lit. After a prayer from Campus Ministry, President Larry Goodwin spoke, noting that the students, staff and community at St. Scholastica are “lights” in our lives. Goodwin then led the countdown to the illumination. When the countdown ended, a switch was triggered and the garland and wreath around the doors lit up, along with groups of evergreen tress in front of Tower Hall. The winners of this year’s talent show, Doing it for the Money, then took center stage as they led the crowd in two Christmas songs, “Joy to the World” and “Silent Night.” The evening ended with

Students Vote on Next Year’s Theme

By Aaron T. Rose

Next fall, Scholastica is going to kick off its first homecoming in 13 years, and its first ever homecoming with football. Now for the big question: What are we going to call it?
A planning committee for homecoming—which includes students, faculty and staff—has been meeting since October in preparation of the inaugural event.
“It’s important that we are prepared so we can start this out right,” said Lisa Roseth, Executive Director of Alumni Relations and chair of the homecoming committee.
Homecoming will culminate with the Oct. 4 football game. Scholastica is scheduled

to take on Crown College at 5:30 p.m. at Griggs Field on the UMD campus. The committee has whittled the list of over 30 themes, mostly submitted by students, down to five.
Now the student body gets the final vote. The five finalist themes are: Ignite the Tradition; Let the Game Begin; Home Saint Home; First and Goal; and Saints for Now, Saints for Life.
Balloting began this week and will continue through Wed. Dec. 12. Students can vote online at http://homecomingtheme.

or at a table set up in the Student Union early next week. Ballots are also available in this issue of The Cable. Voting
